Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo could face questioning from the police after allegedly breaking a car window, covering a 17-year-old girl in broken glass.

The Portuguese footballer was reportedly driving in his Ferrari in Lisbon on Sunday evening when he saw red after spotting a girl filming him from her car. He is said to have leapt out of his vehicle and kicked the window.

But his management company Gestifute say Ron was the wronged one. "Cristiano Ronaldo was the victim of a trap by the paparazzi which ended up in a confrontation between those involved, after the best player in the world and his mother were the target of persecution on the streets of Lisbon,” said a statement.

The statement said that the star had described his own version of events and that the incident involved a male photographer who he had seen “standing for days on end in front of my house, eating yoghurts and holding a camera in his hand, waiting for anything newsworthy to happen and who due to frustration and boredom changed his strategy”.

Ronaldo said he was chased by the man, who was accompanied by the girl, and only intervened because he was with his mother, who was “disturbed and upset” by the unfolding events.

He added: "When I'm on my own, fine, I try to swallow it and remain indifferent. But when my mother is involved, then I'm sorry, but I don't let anyone, I repeat anyone, harass her. I regret what I did, but I can't promise that I would not react in the same way again in the same circumstances, because when my mother is involved, it is very difficult for me to keep a calm state of mind.”
